Turkish, crimean and scythian forms here.
do you have a template or meassures for the Crimean forms? I want to bend some greenwood for next year
I’m planning to draw some template and share it with measures here.
What i find important is agressive tip bend and enough long tip. This one here is about ok. Tip is 11,5cm measured from the very end to the apex of the tip bend. It gives approx 8-9cm long tip measured from the nock groove. Because it would be nice to have some overhang there, 2-3cm.
The maple lath is 64cm long here.
I have read the article writren by one of our firends from Hornbowyers, I am sorry do not remember the name. There was dimentions since the man went to the museum and published the article.
Do you agree with my interpretation? What about the angles? I am planning one Crimean with less reflex syha angle. About 50 degree angle
Istvan Katona. Or somehow like that when loosely written by a foreigner.
I have some forms, but not right now accessable. I have pictures of my tatar bows here and i can pull up some more pictures. What i would do is start out with thin maple - not more than 15mm thick. And try to bend the tip a bit over the target because of spring-back. You might want more smooth bends in tip and kasan. Now the angles are really abrupt if you compare to the old bow. Its curves are more subtle.
Then have quite short kasan and longer bending section (sal). That way you will have more manageable stresses with the reflex grip.
When you use thin maple, you can always reinforce the tips to sufficient thickness. Thicker maple might not bend to your target radius without splintering.
Here i have a picture from few years back of two tatar bows. I think shorter is 120cm nock to nock and longer one 130cm nock to nock. These bows ended up broken for another reasons but what you can see from these is the difference in proportions. With the experience i have now, i really much prefer the lower bow shape because of better proportion between sal-kasan.
I actually have one new tatar bow on the making which i haven’t shared yet. Its quite similar to this lower bow, but maybe a bit more reflexed overall.
Thank you! Yes when I do it the syha angle is going to be less for shure and muc much relaxed transitions between the syha/kasan and kasan/sal. For me it is very difficult to get maple. I have some ash It might work… But do not know if take the risk. Alex Medicinebows make some turkish bows with black locust and they work. When I start the project for shure I am going to post it here
