Horn sizing and I hear crackling noise

hello,

I’m in the process of sizing the horn in my horn sinew composite build.

I’m applying 5% 250 gram strength hide glue, I don’t see any visible delamination but when I warm it up for the next coat I hear small ticking crackling noises. Also when it dries/cures. Is this normal?

I’m also wondering if this color indicates poor adhesion. Thank you

Hello!

I think its a bit dangerous to heat the strips when they already have glue layers. I don’t heat them between layers. If you don’t see any visible delaminations you must have good adhesion!

Sometimes the problems arise later. Then they are also easier to notice. Grey bubbles.

These are easier to see in person because pictures don’t can’t give the same amount of minuscule details. Good luck!

I see. I also think I’m applying too much, making it pool at the base of the groove.

Going to try to apply more thinly.

Good thinking. By adding thinner layers, you can actually make the process faster, since thin layers dry quicker.

I tested sizing with 2%, 3% and 5% and with 5% the layer delaminated. Also reasonable high humidity 60-70% and cold air 15-18C helps.
