Okay, here is the 2024 competition photos and some story about the trip.
It was a exciting time, since we had more broad competition with high level shooting in glassbow category too. First the trip started with visiting the archery range and its dedicated area to bowmaking. The range is in the center of Istanbul (70m range) and so is the workshop! There are few guys who have started to make hornbows there. Cool that archery enjoys this kind of support in Istanbul. Primitive archery too!
Next i have pictures of Alex Wittenaars bows here painted red and gold. Quite nice… We practiced wrapping mushamma for Alex when waiting for the flight shoots. It is the grip cloth that is used to align wrist for primitive pistol grip and better siper shooting. Also some pictures of Adam Karpowicz’s siper and some shooting pics. We did practice shooting after the competition day. Adam K. shot some 550m with hornbow that day. Really good shots!
Competition was tough, here are the results:
Unlimited primitive (hornbow + wood arrow)
Adam Karpowicz 522m
Jere Nyström 494m
Ivar Malde 438m
Unlimited modern (Glassbow + wood arrow)
Ivar Malde 617m
Ole Hansen 608m
Mathias Lehner 606m
My glass bow was so bad i only got 544m. There was a good wind, which might have something to do with the extraordinary good results.
Super…Good pictures.Beautiful bows and arrows.
It’s great to see such a dedication to a sport.
This is the way I see it…Some people like to sprint. Some like to marathon. What really matters is the best of the best come together in their specific faction to compete.
That to me is always entertaining.
I would of hummed around inside that workshop a while that’s for sure.
Good to see Adam win after all the work he’s done.Nice plaque you got there for second place also. That’s a keeper.
What was in that orange bag?
So when it’s unlimited there is no reason to weigh draw weight of bows or weight of arrows before shooting either then I suppose???
Just record the farthest shot.
You can really see the oscillation of the arrow good leaving the bow in one of the pictures.
Those sipers are quite the invention. They really set the arrow off rather far to one side of the grip.
Istanbul competition is for sure the highlight of my archery year. I’ve been there now 3 times.
This year i want to win!
Adam is tough. Amazing condition for a guy in his 70’s.
The plaque i got was a recognition for my work for turkish bows and flight archery. There were others too that got those.
In the backbag are all the trophies we got. We cleaned the table.
Exactly, unlimited categories we don’t weigh bows. Or draw length or anything else. Just measure the longest shot. None of the classes have arrow weigh or length limitations. I think we should have 23" limit, because its susceptible to someone abusing it with really really short arrows. 50# class is won by 18" arrows for example. Its becoming a gimmick in my opinion…
Outstanding…You will get there I’m sure of that.So your plan is to increase the poundage on your bows to get there.
What poundage bow did Adam shoot?
Your new set of 5 or 6 horn bows has been curing how long now?
Another thing…Do the FG bows shoot carbon arrows then?
Hope so! Of course i make better arrows and bows each year so… Last few years its been quite break through. My bows are bulletproof even at 150#. I had some core breakages earlier that robbed speed i think. Here is a picture of a bow from last summer:
147# at 26,5" or so. I eventually tillered it down. Its now 140# at 27,5" from back or 26" from belly as i like to measure them for flight.
Adam shot 95# bow. I shot 110#, but with little under draw so maybe 100-105#. I think my bow was slower than Adam’s.
Will be 5 months in may. I have this bow i just shared the picture from, but its way too heavy. I think i will have plenty of fast new bows. I will do some chrono testing and i will post results. I will test that 140# bow too.
You bet…It’s a beast. With flight shooting the arrow has to play a factor also.
In my world just imagine the KE and momentum of a 600 grain arrow from a bow like that.
Efficiency goes up but now shooting that accurately is another thing.
They say rule of thumb is about half of what you can pull for accuracy.
I pulled 85#'s a couple years ago but don’t ask me to be accurate shooting that draw weight.
